Why a Retreat Might Be the Investment in Yourself You Didn’t Know You Needed

For many years, when I thought about wellness, I thought about movement.

Pilates. Walking. Strength training. Getting outside. Finding ways to feel stronger and healthier in my body.

That is still very much at the heart of what I do through Evexia (Kos).

But over the last few years, my understanding of wellness has grown into something much bigger.

Sometimes, what we really need isn't another workout, another appointment in our already overflowing diary, or another thing to add to our to-do list.

Sometimes, we need to stop.

To step away from the noise.

To have a little space to breathe, think, move, rest and reconnect with ourselves.

And that is where my love of retreats really began.

From Evexia to Retreats in Greece

Many people who know Evexia may not realise that there is another side to what I do.

Alongside Evexia, I am also the founder of Retreats in Greece, a travel agency specialising in retreats across Greece, as well as offering wider travel services.

Retreats in Greece grew out of my own experiences of living in Greece, hosting retreats here, getting to know the people and places that make this country so special, and realising just how much potential Greece has as a wellness destination.

Greece has always been more than a holiday destination to me.

It is somewhere I have come to feel grounded. Somewhere I have learned to slow down. Somewhere I have built a life.

And I wanted to help other people experience that side of Greece too.

Not simply coming here for a week in the sunshine, but coming here with a purpose.

To rest.

To reconnect.

To learn.

To move.

To heal.

To simply have some time that belongs to them.

Today, Retreats in Greece brings together retreats in destinations across Greece, helping people find experiences that fit their individual needs rather than expecting everyone to want the same thing.

And that, I think, is incredibly important.

There Isn't One Definition of a Retreat

When people hear the word retreat, they often immediately think of yoga.

And yes, there are some wonderful yoga retreats.

But retreats can be so much more than that.

There are retreats centred around:

  • Yoga and Pilates

  • Hiking and walking

  • Fitness and movement

  • Meditation and mindfulness

  • Personal development

  • Women's wellbeing

  • Creativity

  • Nutrition

  • Spirituality

  • Mental wellbeing

  • Rest and relaxation

  • Nature

  • Adventure

  • Transformation

  • Learning something new

There are quiet retreats where you might spend hours in nature.

There are more active retreats where your days are filled with movement and exploration.

There are retreats designed for people travelling alone and others that are perfect for friends.

There are luxury retreats and simpler, more affordable experiences.

There are retreats for people who want to completely switch off and retreats for those who want to come home feeling inspired and energised.

In other words, there really is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all retreat.

And that is why choosing the right one matters.

The Right Retreat Matters

I have spoken to many people who love the idea of going on a retreat but feel completely overwhelmed when they start looking.

And I understand why.

Search online for "wellness retreat Greece" and you can be presented with hundreds of beautiful photographs, gorgeous locations and seemingly endless options.

But the prettiest retreat isn't necessarily the right retreat for you.

If you are exhausted and desperately need rest, a retreat packed with early morning yoga, hiking and activities all day might not be what your body needs.

If you love being active and want to explore, a retreat focused almost entirely on sitting quietly might leave you feeling frustrated.

If you are travelling alone for the first time, the group dynamic might be important.

If you are going through a major life transition, you might want something completely different again.

Your budget matters.

Your dates matter.

The location matters.

Your personality matters.

And perhaps most importantly, what you actually need from the experience matters.

This is one of the reasons I created the Retreat Matching service at Retreats in Greece. Rather than simply sending someone a list of retreats, we try to understand the person first — what they are looking for, where they are in life, what they can afford, how they like to travel and what they hope to get from their time away.

Because sometimes the best retreat isn't the one that looks the most impressive on Instagram.

It's the one that feels right for you.

But Do We Really Need a Retreat?

This is a question I think many of us ask ourselves.

"Can I really justify spending money on myself?"

"Shouldn't I be saving that money?"

"I've got too much going on."

"I'll do it when things calm down."

"I have other people who need me."

And I completely understand those thoughts.

But I also think there is something important to consider.

We are often very good at investing in everything except ourselves.

We invest in our homes.

Our families.

Our careers.

Our businesses.

Our children.

Our responsibilities.

And sometimes, somewhere along the way, we put ourselves at the bottom of the list.

A retreat gives you permission to move yourself back up that list.

Not because you are being selfish.

Because you matter too.

A Retreat Is More Than a Holiday

There is nothing wrong with going on holiday simply because you want to sit by a pool, drink something cold and do absolutely nothing.

I am a huge believer in that too!

But a retreat can be something slightly different.

It creates intentional space.

Space to step away from your normal environment.

Space to put your phone down.

Space to meet people.

Space to move your body.

Space to sleep.

Space to think.

Space to ask yourself some questions that perhaps haven't had room to surface in everyday life.

And sometimes, you don't even know what you need until you finally stop long enough to hear yourself.

That is the beauty of a retreat.

You don't necessarily have to arrive with everything figured out.

You don't need to have a five-year plan.

You don't need to be "broken" and in need of fixing.

You don't even need to have a particular problem.

Sometimes you simply need some time for yourself.

And You Don't Have to Travel Far

One of the things I love most about living on Kos is the access we have to so many incredible places.

And I have some exciting news for 2027.

There will be retreats happening right here on Kos.

I am not specifically hosting all of these retreats myself, but some I will be helping with behind the scenes, while others will be experiences that we will be proudly endorsing through Retreats in Greece.

There will also be opportunities on some of our neighbouring islands, including Kalymnos and Nisyros.

So if the idea of a retreat appeals to you but you don't fancy travelling halfway around the world, you may not have to.

Sometimes your next reset could be just a short boat ride away.

Details of the 2027 retreats will be shared as they are confirmed, so keep an eye on both Evexia and Retreats in Greece for what's coming.

Greece Is Made for Retreats

Perhaps I am biased.

After all, I chose Greece as my home.

But I genuinely believe there is something about Greece that lends itself beautifully to wellness and retreat experiences.

The light.

The sea.

The mountains.

The food.

The slower pace.

The islands.

The walking trails.

The connection to nature.

And perhaps most importantly, the feeling that you can breathe a little more deeply here.

Greece doesn't have to be about rushing from one sightseeing opportunity to the next.

It can be about sitting quietly beside the sea.

Walking through a mountain village.

Moving your body in the morning.

Eating a long, relaxed meal.

Watching the sunset.

Meeting new people.

Or simply doing absolutely nothing for an afternoon without feeling guilty about it.

That, to me, is wellness too.

You Are Worth the Investment

I don't believe that everyone needs to go on a retreat.

But I do believe that everyone deserves time for themselves.

And if you have been thinking about taking some time away, perhaps the question isn't:

"Can I afford to take this time for myself?"

Perhaps the question is:

"What might happen if I did?"

You might return rested.

You might return stronger.

You might meet wonderful people.

You might discover something new about yourself.

You might simply sleep, breathe and feel like yourself again.

And sometimes, that is more than enough.

Discover Retreats Across Greece

If you've been thinking about trying a retreat but don't know where to start, take a look at Retreats in Greece. You'll find retreats across Greece, with different locations, styles, durations and focuses, and our personalised retreat matching service can help you find something suited to you.

And if you're booking a retreat and need help with the practical side of your journey, Retreats in Greece can also arrange flights, ferries, accommodation, transfers and other travel services, so your retreat doesn't have to be the only thing you organise yourself.

Because sometimes investing in yourself isn't about doing more.

Sometimes it's about finally giving yourself permission to pause.
